Polish-Czech jazz showcase
The most interesting phenomena of young jazz from Poland and the Czech Republic during the Central European Jazz Showcase on June 23 and 24 in Brno. The event is held as part of the foreign cultural program of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2025
A review of the most interesting young jazz bands from Poland and the Czech Republic will take place on June 23 and 24
at Brno's CED - Husa Theatre na Provázku, during the fifth edition of the competitive
Central European Jazz Showcase. Eight finalists,
selected from 75 submitted bands, will perform live on Monday, June 23. The selection was made by a jury of Polish and Czech
musicians, composers, educators and journalists.
Poland will be represented by: Akimbo, Blu/Bry, Karolina Błachnia Quartet and Ziółek Quartet.
Qualified Czech bands and artists are: Deaf Platypus, Josef Hanulík, Petr Nohavica -
Glance and Point of Few. Each band will present a twenty-minute set. In addition to the
audience, representatives of European jazz festivals,
clubs, agencies and the media will be in the audience. At the end of the evening, the winners will be announced - one
each from Poland and the Czech Republic. A day later, the artists and invited representatives of the jazz industry will meet
during networking sessions.
"I am glad that we have established cooperation with the JazzFestBrno festival from the Czech Republic, thanks to which we can
invite music lovers to the first Polish-Czech jazz showcase in Brno. What's more,
the event is part of the program celebrating the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union."
- says Tomasz Handzlik, director of the Jazz Juniors Festival and Competition and president of the
Film and Jazz Music Foundation, which co-organizes the event. "Polish jazz has for years enjoyed great
recognition on European stages. Suffice it to mention such icons as Tomasz Stańko, Krzysztof
Komeda or Zbigniew Seifert. I believe that the new generation of young Polish jazz musicians
- for it is to them that this event is dedicated - will prove that this new wave is equally
promising and talented," Handzlik adds.
"We are looking forward to a direct comparison of Czech and Polish bands and to the friendly atmosphere,
that always accompanies showcases organized in Brno. I myself am curious if
an artist will appear who can be called a true discovery. We know from experience that
more than one band after such a show has gained an invitation to prestigious foreign stages. I hope
that it will be the same this year as well." - emphasizes Vilém Spilka, artistic director of the
JazzFestBrno festival.
The jury consisted of musician, educator and publicist Jakub Doležal, saxophonist and educator Nela
Dusová, publicist, vocalist and harmonica player Ondřej Konrád, pianist, composer and educator
Mateusz Palka, guitarist, composer and arranger Rafal Sarnecki, and violinist and educator Mateusz
Smoczynski.
The Central European Jazz Showcase is co-organized by the JazzFestBrno festival, Kraków's
Festival and Jazz Juniors Competition, and the Film and Jazz Music Foundation.
The event is co-organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of the foreign
cultural program of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2025 financed by
Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
